Malik Carter grows up poor, practicing on a broken outdoor court as his mother juggles multiple jobs to feed him. An NBA scout quietly selects him as the top draft pick, but during a month of closed pre-draft testing he cannot be reached. His hometown assumes the worst, spreading a rumor that he was arrested for prostitution. His uncle, aunt, and cousin lead the church to turn against Malik and his mother, robbing them of dignity and even burning her hand to punish his supposed lies. When the truth emerges, those who wronged his family rush to apologize, but Malik's struggle is not finished. At his rookie celebration, the father who walked out on his pregnant mother appears with a new wife and a stepson chasing the same basketball dream. As the draft countdown reaches zero, everyone who doubted, humiliated, or betrayed Malik and his mother must face the consequences of their actions.
